Piers Art Park Construction Project begins Friday

May 14—LEWISBURG — Dave Gutelius Excavating Inc. will begin construction at the Piers Art Park in downtown Lewisburg on Friday.

In March, council members awarded the Piers Art Project to Dave Gutelius Excavating Inc., of Mifflinburg, in the amount of $704,659. The park is located at 539 Cherry Alley, Lewisburg.

The gravel Lewisburg Borough Municipal Parking Lot 5 at the Piers Art Park and the park itself will close on Friday morning and remain closed for the duration of construction. Substantial construction activities at the Piers Art Park are expected to be completed by the end of August 2024, according to borough officials.

Cherry Alley at Piers Art Park (west of North Fifth Street) will also be closed at times during construction activities, according to borough officials.

The borough-owned section of the Mixed Use Path between Market Street and the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail and the Union County Trail Authority-owned trail between North Seventh Street and the railroad tracks will remain open for now. These sections of the Mixed Use Path and the trail will close later in the project when stormwater pipe improvements are undertaken, according to the borough.

"We plan to reopen the Mixed Use Path and the BVRT as soon as possible," according to a borough announcement. "We expect the parking lot to reopen in early September 2024. We do not know if the Piers Art Park itself will reopen in late 2024 or spring of 2025. The reopening will likely be dependent upon acceptable grass growth in the park area."

The new trees, shrubs and grass will be planted later in the fall during more ideal weather conditions.
