Piedmont Natural Gas breaks ground on new Charlotte operations center

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Piedmont Natural Gas broke ground Wednesday at the future site of a northwest Charlotte facility.

Officials for PNG, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, say the new Charlotte Operations Center on Rhyne Road will help the company better serve its customers in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

“We’re excited to begin this new chapter for Piedmont Natural Gas in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County,” said Brian Weisker, senior vice president and chief operations officer for Piedmont Natural Gas at the ceremony. “This new operations center will allow us to operate our business safely and more efficiently, and enhance employee collaboration and productivity to better serve our customers and communities.”

PNG’s new facility is expected to open in July 2025 and will consolidate operational teams from the current operations centers on Yancey Road, Piedmont Town Center in South Park and the Huntersville Operations Center. The company acquired the land off Interstate 485 in March 2023.

Officials cited the fast-growing Lower South End neighborhood for the move.

“Piedmont has called Yancey Road home for decades, and we’ve enjoyed being a fixture of the Lower South End community,” Weisker said. “However, as the area experienced unparalleled growth and we evaluated our business needs and how to reduce costs to benefit customers, it became clear that relocating to this new space is the best option to serve our customers in the future.”

The 9-acre property for the Charlotte Operations Center on Yancey Road was listed for sale in December 2023. PNG’s Technology and Design Center across the street is not part of the sale and will remain in operation following the sale and move to the new Charlotte Operations Center.

PNG distributes natural gas to more than 1.1 million residential, commercial, industrial and power generation customers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
