Piatt Co. Sheriff’s Office collects 31 lbs of unwanted medicine

MPONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — Officials with the Piatt County Sheriff’s Office are calling a recent prescription drug take-back event a success.

The Sheriff’s Office was one of 16 law enforcement and public health agencies that hosted events on Saturday for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. In four hours, officials said 31 pounds of unwanted drugs were collected for disposal.

Collection of unwanted or expired medication helps curb medication misuse and opioid addiction, officials said.

If anyone was unable to make it to the event to dispose of their unwanted or expired medication, the Piatt County Sheriff’s Office has a collection bin in its lobby that is available 24/7. Items that can be accepted include prescription medicines, ointments and liquids, over the counter medicines, vitamins and pet medications.

The Sheriff’s Office will not accept needles and sharps, medications from businesses or clinics, non-prescription ointments, lotions and liquids, aerosol cans, inhalers, hydrogen peroxide and illegal drugs.
