Physician, pilot hospitalized after medical plane crash lands in North Carolina

MORRISVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A physician and a pilot have been hospitalized after a medical plane crash landed in North Carolina on Wednesday.

The crash happened at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, where Nexstar’s WNCN found a small plane in a grassy area near a runway. At least one wing was no longer attached, and a logo for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was visible.

Officials on scene said two people were onboard and suffered injuries.

UNC Health confirmed the plane was one of its UNC Air Operations Medical planes and that the physician and pilot on board were taken to the hospital.

The Federal Aviation Administration had issued a ground stop at RDU “due to a disabled aircraft on the runway,” but that stop has now been lifted.

The plane’s flight plan shows it had taken off from Wilmington International Airport earlier Wednesday morning.

One traveler named Sarah took to X, formerly Twitter, to share her experience. She was on a plane starting to taxi when “pilots came over saying airport has shut down.”

Details on what caused the plane to make a hard landing were not immediately available.
