Crossrail workers work in the tunnel after the thousand tonne tunneling machine, named after Britain's Queen Victoria, broke through to complete this section of tunnel, some 35 meters underground at Whitechapel, in London, Friday, April 4, 2014. The breakthrough marks the completion of some 19 miles of tunnels, out of the 26 total, needed to complete the construction of Crossrail’s train tunnels. The tunneling machine with a 7.1m diameter cutterhead is being used for the massive Crossrail project which will link many parts of the London transport network to cut journey times and alleviate congestion, with a scheduled completion in five years. The £14.8 billion cross-London Crossrail scheme could be extended, British Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has announced.

The extension would take high-speed train Crossrail services to Hertfordshire, he said.

If the plan goes ahead, there will be Crossrail links, providing faster commuter services, to the Hertfordshire stations of Tring, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhampstead and Watford Junction as well as to Harrow & Wealdstone in north west London. (AP)
