Belle Brockhoff

Australian snowboard cross competitor Belle Brockhoff is the only openly gay athlete on the 2013 Australian Winter Olympic team. Brockhoff says she refuses to mask her identity when she heads to Sochi. "I'm not happy and there's a bunch of other Olympians who are not happy either," Brockhoff said. Openly gay Olympians, past and present

Yahoo SportsJanuary 28, 2014

Despite a prevailing Russian propaganda law that bans discussion of gay rights and relationships in front of minors, several gay athletes plan to attend and compete in Sochi's Winter Olympics. LGBT rights groups have planned several gestures to counter the law without breaking it: carrying rainbow flags, holding hands during ceremonies, and even wearing hoodies quoting Principle 6 of the Olympic charter, which prohibits discrimination in any form during the Games. According to the International Olympics Committee, athletes will be able to make statements against the laws in press conferences, but may face charges if they do so on the podium or in Olympic venues. -- Chelsea Evers
