The cargo train derailed in the southeastern part of Mexico early Sunday morning, killing at least six people and injuring several more when it careened off the track near a river in Tabasco state. Many Central American migrants had been traveling via the train service to cross through Mexico and then emigrate illegally to the U.S.

Security and civil protection officials in the municipality of Huimanguillo said 250 to 300 people were aboard the train when it crashed at a site far from any road and only accessible by air or boat.
