Michael Thomas: Fact check this: The Great Depression of 1929 happened primarily because of unregulated Wall Street. The Great Recession of 2007 happened primarily because of deregulated Wall Street. Both political parties share the blame for both economic crises, but one party is much more to blame than the other. Yes, Clinton replaced Glass Steagall (Steagall put regulations on wall street in the aftermath of the Depression) with the Gramm Leach Bliley Act (which greatly deregulated wall street and rendered the SEC powerless). However, the Bliley Act was authored, promoted, and unilaterally supported by the REPUBLICANS (hence the name, Gramm, Leach, and Bliley). It is also known that the Republicans have been trying to loosen Wall Street and lending regulations for at least 40 years (why didn't they learn from the past mistakes that led to the Depression?). Clinton signed the Bliley Act into law to make concessions in regards to the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). The CRA was enacted to prevent Redlining (Redlining prevented minorities from buying real estate and obtaining loans, even if they met the mathmatical debt to income ratio formula) and other forms of discriminatory lending practices. A well intentioned law (the CRA) was perverted by parlaying it into the newly deregulated Wall Street. Toxic subprime mortgages were bundled up in craaaaazy, confusing ways, and traded in stock markets across the globe (the beginning of the house of cards, which eventually fell down). If the Bliley Act did not exist, we would not have had an economic crisis. In both cases (the Depression and Great Recession), Democrats had to put this country in major debt in order to stimulate the economy so that the economy wouldn't completely crash. It should also be noted that the Dodd-Frank Act (which put back regulations on the stock market and lending institutions) was signed into law by a Democratic president, and as a result, Wall Street has been overall healthy for the past 5-6 years, as well as the economy as a whole. I have determined that Democrat ideology is better, more stable, and more safe for economies. Don't take MY word for it... do your OWN research right here on the internet!!! I will be voting Democrat. Their ideologies are far from perfect, but it's much better than the alternative.
