A tale of two wrecks: U-166 and SS Robert E. Lee
The wrecks of SS Robert E. Lee and U-166 rest only a few miles apart in the Gulf of Mexico, both sunk within several minutes of each other during World War II. These photos were captured by an exploration team earlier this month during visit to the nearly 72-year-old wrecks.
The E/V Nautilus conducted forensic archaeological documentation and surveys of the U-boat and related shipwrecks to better understand how they met their fate. Many of the shipwrecks had not been documented in any detail, so the team on board conducted high resolution mapping in addition to visual surveys to create 3-D images of the wreck sites.
