A new look inside North Korea

    •January 1, 1970
    • FILE - In this April 17, 2011, file photo, North Korean soldiers stand guard inside the building shared by North and South Korea at the truce village of Panmunjom at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) which separates the two Koreas. The search is on for a venue to host a summit between President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. There are lots of caveats. Trump is being urged not to legitimize Kim by agreeing to talks in North Korea. And it’s risky for Kim to travel to the U.S. So the leaders are more likely to meet in a neutral place, such as the demilitarized zone between the Koreas. (AP Photo/David Guttenfelder, File)

South Korea said on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, that North Korean soldiers shot at and injured a fellow soldier who was crossing the border village to try to defect to the South. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the injured North Korean was being taken to a hospital after crossing the border village of Panmunjom. Defections are rare by that route. Straddling the world's most heavily fortified border, the Korean truce village of Panmunjom is a potentially dangerous flashpoint where North Korean soldiers hacked to death two American soldiers at the height of the Cold War. The Associated Press and North Korea's state-run news agency have agreed to expand news gathering in the communist country. David Guttenfelder, AP’s Chief Asia Photographer, will have special access and has already taken several photos since April, 2011.
