OUTLOOK: Portland’s cherry blossom forecast as spring approaches

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Longer days and warmer temperatures are the first signs of spring, but the Portland-Vancouver metro area has been cloudy and cold.

Morning lows have been dipping below freezing, but that’s not stopping some spring flowers from blooming. One of Portland’s classic spring sights — the waterfront cherry blossoms — are starting to hint at the arrival of spring. The cherry blossom trees from the Burnside Bridge to Steel Bridge are already starting to bud.

The early morning lows near freezing this week will slow the buds progression, but won’t likely have any negative impacts on this year’s flowers.

It’s not just the blooms that are starting to emerge, but leaf foliage is also starting to ramp up around the country. It’s no surprise that many of the southern states are already fully engulfed in spring.

The Pacific Northwest is expected to start warming and drying over the next week to two weeks.

Meteorological spring is well underway, but the official start of astronomical spring doesn’t start until March 19, 2024. Temperatures will only continue to build as March pushes forward. If temperatures continue to trend warmer, then the peak of Portland’s cherry blossoms will happen around the end of March.

Last year, many of the cherry blossom trees started to pop around March 20, 2023. It looks as if this year’s timeline will mimic last year’s, if temperatures trend warmer.

Portland’s waterfront cherry blossoms will likely peak around March 17-23 and will quickly fade by the end of the month. By the start of April, most of the flower peddles will have come down, leaving behind a nice shade of green leaves.
