Photos: Plane veers off runway onto cliff at Trabzon Airport, Turkey

A passenger plane ran off of the runway and over a cliff towards the Black Sea at Trabzon Airport in Turkey on Saturday night.

The aircraft stopped on a steep embankment, as it came within yards of plunging into the Black Sea.

Trabzon Gov. Yucel Yavuz said all 162 passengers and crew on board were evacuated and safe early Sunday. The cause of the accident was not yet known.

It was raining at the Trabzon Airport from 10:10 p.m. local time Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday. The plane was scheduled to land during when it was raining, according to FlightAware.

Pegasus Airlines issued this statement:

"We're sorry to report that the Boeing 737-800 type TC-CPF registered aircraft of Pegasus Airlines Flight Number PC 8622 Ankara-Trabzon flight scheduled at 18:25 UTC [9:25 p.m. local time] tonight, had a Runway Excursion Incident during landing at Trabzon Airport (13 January 2018).... There has been no loss of life or injury to anyone on-board."
