AUSTIN (KXAN) — It’s one of the best times of the year — bluebonnets season!
According to the Texas State Historical Association, the bluebonnet was adopted as the state flower on March 7, 1901. They usually bloom in late March and early April every year.
In the 1930s, the Texas Highway Department began an initiative to cultivate native wildflower species along state roadways. Former First Lady Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson was a big supporter of this effort.
We asked KXAN viewers to submit photos of their pets enjoying the iconic native wildflowers. You can click through a gallery of those submissions below, and this story will be updated as more photos are received.
