FOX 13 viewers capture amazing views of Northern Lights

A powerful solar storm put on an amazing light show across the Pacific Northwest Friday night into Saturday morning.

FOX 13 viewers shared their colorful photos of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights.

"It was cool to see the Aurora through the trees and reflecting off the water," said John Murphy.

Murphy was able to take several pictures of the spectacle from Alki Beach.

Photos revealed purple, green, yellow and pink hues of the northern lights across our region and worldwide.

"We were chasing it," said Seattle resident Nick Roberts. "There was too much light pollution where we were, but we eventually went to a soccer field in Redmond. It was amazing, there were like 1,000 other people who had the same idea too."

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the solar storm will persist throughout the weekend, offering another chance for many to catch the northern lights. While the second sighting on Saturday night was dismal compared to Friday's, there's another chance to catch the Aurora Sunday night, though cloud cover could lower the chance of seeing it.

If you missed it or didn't get a good view, here are some tips to enhance your future viewing experience:

  • Stay away from the city. If you can, get to a location that has as little artificial light as possible

  • For the best views, have an unobstructed view to the north.

  • If you can, travel to the northern parts of the Puget Sound area. This will increase sightings of any aurora activity.
