CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Cleveland Cavaliers plan to move to a 210,000-square-foot training facility in downtown Cleveland, expected to be one of the largest in the world.

The Cleveland Clinic Global Peak Performance Center, planned along the Cuyahoga River, will serve as the team’s “new home.” It’ll be where Cavs players will train and where the general public can get “comprehensive care,” according to a news release.

Project approval and groundbreaking are expected before the end of the year, according to the release.

The facility represents a “substantial investment” in the franchise’s long-term success, extending players’ careers and helping athletes “attain their highest potential,” reads the release.

“The vision and functionality of this state-of-the-art facility will be a generational game changer for the Cleveland Cavaliers,” Cavs President Koby Altman is quoted in the release. “The overall investment in this project speaks to how much the franchise prioritizes the well-being of our players, while also delivering exceptional resources to enhance their skills to an elite level.”

It’s a partnership between the Cavs, the Cleveland Clinic and Bedrock Real Estate. It’s also part of a $3.5 billion development plan for 35 acres along the city’s riverfront, and expected to make Cleveland “a global sports science and wellness destination,” reads the release.

“This project is the first step in creating a more vibrant and growth-oriented neighborhood, transforming the look and feel of downtown,” Dan Gilbert, Cavs chairman and Bedrock founder, is quoted in the release. “We are grateful to our partners at the city of Cleveland and the Cleveland Clinic for their support with this very important and exciting project that will ignite our new vision for the riverfront.”

The facility will offer access to “high-tech” training equipment and devices and specialists in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, cardiology, pulmonology, exercise physiology, neurology, nutrition, psychology and genetics, according to the release.

“This project will not only enhance the landscape of Cleveland but will also provide new approaches and applications to improve the health of our community through multidisciplinary care for patients of all athletic abilities,” said Dr. Tom Mihaljevic, CEO and President of the Cleveland Clinic.

The Cleveland Clinic has been the Cavs’ official healthcare provider since 1993, according to the release. Currently, Cavs players train at the Cleveland Clinic Courts in Independence.

The facility was designed by Populous Studio, a global design firm behind more than 3,000 sports, entertainment and art projects worth a combined $40 billion — including architecture for the Olympics, World Cups and Super Bowls, according to the release.
