PHOTOS: Firefighters rescue dog from freezing river

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — Akron firefighters rescued a dog from the frigid waters of the Cuyahoga River on Monday evening.

Firefighters responded to the river bend at Gorge Metro Park, near the intersection of Drexel Avenue and Riverside Drive, just before 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 18, according to a news release.

“When fire personnel arrived, they found a large dog in the water near the riverbank struggling to stay afloat,” reads the release.

A rescue team and dive team needed rope to save the pooch, who was at the bottom of a steep embankment, according to the release. They lowered one firefighter down to pull the dog from the water, then both were pulled back up.

The dog was transported to a local veterinary clinic by Akron police officers.
