Photos: Dead fish discovered on North Carolina interstate as floodwaters recede

Hundreds of dead fish were discovered on Interstate 40 when floodwaters receded following Hurricane Florence.

As floodwaters from the hurricane began to recede more than a week after the storm made landfall, first responders came across the fish on a stretch of highway near Wallace, North Carolina, which had been hit hard by flooding.

The flooding from the deadly hurricane pushed the fish from their natural habitat and stranded them on the interstate.

The Penderlea County Fire Department was tasked with cleaning the fish off the major Interstate by hosing the fish off of the road.

"Well, we can add 'washing fish off of the interstate' to the long list of interesting things firefighters get to experience!" the Penderlea Fire Department said in a Facebook post.
