Photos: Colorado hospitals celebrate babies born on 2024 leap day

DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado welcomed many new babies on Thursday — much like any other Thursday. But Feb. 29 only comes once every four years.

The chances of being born on a Leap Day are just 1 in every 1,461 days, so several hospitals shared photos and details of newborns who entered the world on the 2024 leap year. Some hospitals took some time to celebrate the “leap” babies, as is common for many holidays.

It appears this year’s leap day was for mostly the boys, as AdventHealth reported five baby boys and Denver Health reported 10 boys. UCHealth reported five babies born as of 2 p.m. but only shared details of one — also a boy.

“We were thrilled to welcome these little ‘leaplings’ into the world today!” Chloe Dean, AdventHealth communications manager, said in a release.

Denver Health also welcomed leap day infants into the world. The hospital staff had delivered 12 leap day babies — 10 boys and two girls — as of 4 p.m. Thursday and was expecting to deliver 17 babies total by midnight.

One of Denver Health’s first babies of the day was born to Charise Dixon. Dixon gave birth to her daughter, Serenniti Stark, who was born at 2:18 a.m. and weighed 5 pounds, 12 ounces.

As of 2 p.m. at UCHealth, five babies had entered the world. A total of 12 were expected by the end of the day. One family shared photos of their leap day baby, Genesis, who was born at 8:01 a.m. weighing 7 pounds, 1.06 ounces and measuring about 19 inches.

Labor and delivery nurse Karen Agee crocheted frog hats for the infants to celebrate leap day, crocheting 12 in total. Agee said she’s been crocheting for a long time and landed on the project while searching for something new.

Agee said the parents love the hats, saying they’re cute and special, especially because the babies technically only get their true birthday every four years.

The Intermountain Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette also shared news of a leap day baby. Madelyn Harper Cohen was born at 9:36 a.m. to Tori and Dave Cohen. Also welcoming Madelyn was her big sister, Eleanor, who was born at Good Samaritan almost two years ago.
