'Phony suppression poll': Trump bashes poll that shows him trailing against Biden, Sanders, Warren

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump slammed a new poll Wednesday as a "phony suppression poll" after it showed him trailing behind several major Democratic presidential candidates for the 2020 election.

In an ABC News/Washington Post poll published Wednesday, Joe Biden has a 15 percentage point lead over Trump among registered voters, with the former Vice President at 55% and the president at 40%.

The margin between that match-up has grown since July, where Biden was at 53% and Trump was at 43% — a 10 percentage points difference.

"In a hypothetical poll, done by one of the worst pollsters of them all, the Amazon Washington Post/ABC, which predicted I would lose to Crooked Hillary by 15 points (how did that work out?), Sleepy Joe, Pocahontas and virtually all others would beat me in the General Election," Trump wrote in a tweet. "This is a phony suppression poll, meant to build up their Democrat partners.

"I haven’t even started campaigning yet, and am constantly fighting Fake News like Russia, Russia, Russia," he continued. "Look at North Carolina last night. Dan Bishop, down big in the Polls, WINS. Easier than 2016!"

Biden isn't the only candidate that holds a lead against Trump.

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont holds a 9 percentage point lead over Trump among registered voters, with Sanders at 52% and Trump at 43%. That is a jump from July, where there was only a 1 percentage point difference, with Trump at 48% and Sanders at 49%.

Both Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris also hold a small 7 percentage point lead among registered voters. Warren is at 51% while Trump is at 44% in that match-up, a jump from July where the two were tied at 48%.

Harris is at 50% while Trump is at 43% in their match-up, a small jump from July, where she was at 48% and Trump at 46%.

In a match-up with South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Trump is at 43 compared to Buttigieg at 47. The 4 percentage point difference is not statistically significant due to the margin of error.

There is a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points, with 1,003 adults surveyed between Sept. 2-5. The interviews were conducted by landline and cell phones, as well as in English and Spanish.

Trump on Tuesday bashed a separate ABC/Washington Post poll on his approval rating. The poll showed his approval rating drop to 38% from 44% in July.

The president has repeatedly criticized his standing in polls and approval ratings in a variety of surveys throughout his presidency. Trump has often referred to polling he disagrees with as "suppression polls" or "phony polls."
