Phoenix airport train to being service on April 8

Automated inter-terminal train at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to start on April 8

PHOENIX (AP) -- The automated inter-terminal train at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport will begin service next month.

Airport officials say the PHX Sky Train will have its ribbon-cutting ceremony and then be open to the public at noon on April 8.

The driverless train will connect airport passengers between Terminal 4, the East Economy parking lot and the Metro light-rail station at 44th and Washington streets.

Trains will arrive and depart every three to four minutes and operate 24 hours a day and year-round at no charge.

It's the first phase of a $1.5 billion project.

Officials plan for the train to extend to Terminal 3 with a walkway to Terminal 2 by early 2015.

In its final stage, Sky Train will connect to the airport's rental car center as well.
