Philly casino owner to pay $650,000 to resolve allegations of illegal dumping into river
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The owner of a Philadelphia casino has agreed to pay $650,000 to resolve allegations that construction materials were illegally dumped into the Delaware River several years ago.
The U.S. Attorney's office said Monday that SugarHouse HSP Gaming would pay $625,000 to the Brandywine Conservancy and the rest to the United States as a civil penalty.
Prosecutors alleged that from 2009 to 2010 dredged and/or fill material was discharged into the water without a needed permit from the Army Corps of Engineers along Piers 42 and 43 in violation of the Clean Water and Rivers and Harbors acts.
The company issued a statement Monday saying officials "regret the actions of our contractors and subcontractors" during casino construction, and they support the Army Corps' mission "to protect the environment and our waterways."
