Pfizer gets broader Prevnar 13 vaccine approval
Pfizer says EU approves Prevnar 13 vaccine for children and adolescents up to age 17
NEW YORK (AP) -- Pfizer Inc. said Tuesday that European Union regulators approved the use of its Prevnar 13 vaccine in children and adolescents aged 6 to 17.
The vaccine protects against 13 strains of pneumococcal bacteria, which can cause meningitis, pneumonia and ear infections, and it is the top-selling vaccine ever. It is marketed as Prevnar 13 in the U.S. and Prevenar 13 in Europe. Prevnar 13 was originally approved for use in infants and children aged two months to 5 years, and later it was approved for adults 50 and older.
Shares of Pfizer picked up 17 cents to $26.15 in morning trading.
