Petitions funneling in for Mitchell City Council election, while mayoral race up to three candidates

Mar. 13—MITCHELL — The field of candidates running for seats on the Mitchell City Council has expanded over the past few days.

Sarah Deakins filed a petition for the Ward 1 council seat on the June 4 ballot. As of Wednesday, Deakins, an advertising representative at a local radio station, is the lone candidate to file a petition for Ward 1.

Dan Sabers currently holds the Ward 1 council seat that's up for election, and he's yet to file a petition.

After opting not to run for mayor, Mitchell City Council President Kevin McCardle filed his petition for Ward 2. McCardle is eyeing a third term on the council.

While no petitions have been filed for the Ward 3 council seat on the June 4 ballot, longtime council member Marty Barington said he is seeking re-election. Barington has held the Ward 3 council seat since 2006.

Two candidates have filed petitions for the Ward 4 council seat. Longtime council member Jeff Smith and Don Everson, a former Mitchell detective, will be on the ballot for Ward 4, the northwest quadrant of the city.

Smith has represented Ward 4 on the council for 18 years. Once again, Everson is challenging an incumbent candidate in this year's election.

Each council seat on the ballot is a three-year term.

The mayoral race features three candidates.

Mayor Bob Everson, Jordan Hanson, a local real estate developer, and Terry Sabers, former co-president of Muth Electric, have filed petitions for the mayoral election. Everson is eyeing a third mayoral term, while Hanson and Sabers are eyeing a first term.

Additional candidates for both the mayoral and council elections could emerge over the next two weeks, as nominating petitions for the mayoral race and four city council seats must be submitted by 5 p.m. on March 26.
