Peters Wins Mich. 14th Primary

CORRECTION: The email alert and original version of this story misstated the number of non-black members representing majority-black districts. There will likely be two in the next Congress.

Rep. Gary Peters defeated Rep. Hansen Clarke in Michigan's 14th District Democratic primary.

  • With 89 percent of precincts reporting, Peters led Clarke 47 percent to 35 percent. The Associated Press called the race for Peters.

  • Peters crafted a coalition of business and union support and made inroads into more African-American Wayne County from his whiter Oakland County base, while Clarke failed to expand his downtown Detroit base. Peters looked like the odd man out in Michigan after redistricting, and under 30 percent of his old constituents are in the majority-minority district.

  • The district is safely Democratic, and Peters will likely become only the second non-black member of Congress to represent a majority-black district in January. For more visit Hotline On Call.
