INDIANAPOLIS — A person is dead after a road rage shooting led to a vehicle crashing into a pond, Indiana State Police said.

The "gunfire altercation" happened about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 65 near County Line Road. A vehicle then flipped into a pond near Tanza Road on the city's southeast side near Greenwood.

Reports of gunfire on the interstate came in at the same time as reports of a vehicle going off the road into a pond. Within minutes, Indiana State troopers and Indianapolis Fire Department divers were in the pond, said ISP Sgt. John Perrine.

The driver of the vehicle, identified Thursday as Ryan Hawkins, 35, was ejected before it landed in the water. No one else was inside.

“We do have a large crime scene here," Perrine said, referring to the wide swath of area marked off with tape Wednesday. "It’s also a crash scene."

Officials have not yet released information about the vehicles involved.

State police on Thursday said the investigation revealed that shots were being fired from another vehicle toward the one that crashed. Hawkins suffered gunshot wounds and injuries from being ejected.

Investigators also found what they believe are bullet holes in the side of the vehicle once it was removed from the pond.

Late Wednesday evening detectives found the other vehicle they believe was involved but as of 1 p.m. Thursday, no arrests had been made, an ISP news release states.
