Marsh views, more space: Will you shop at Cape Cancer Thrift Shop's new Sandwich location?

A longstanding Cape Cod thrift store that has donated thousands of dollars to help fight cancer has settled into its new location at 124 Route 6A in Sandwich.

"It's perfect, we love it," said Cape Cancer Thrift Shop Director Ellen Poluzzi. "It's a lot more spacious, the windows are great overlooking the marsh. We've been very happy ... We've been very fortunate to be welcomed by Sandwich."

The more-than-50-year-old shop sells small furniture, house goods, art, kitchen supplies, seasonal decorations, jewelry and more.

Cape Cancer Thrift Shop moved to the new address in October. The building previously housed the Sandwich Arts Alliance that is now at the historic Town Hall.

Buckland Family Living Trust bought the building from Sandwich Associates, LLC on Sept. 27 for $540,000, according to the assessor's office.

The Times reported in June that the store had to leave its previous location after the 1,700-square-foot Cape style leased building along Route 6A in West Barnstable was sold.

Donating with a strategy

The shop donates most of its proceeds to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and most recently gave a portion to Cape Wellness Collaborative, which supports patients on the Cape.

"We've always donated to Dana Farber, that's our primary spot to donate, and then we wanted to donate more locally to the Cape," said Poluzzi. "Cape Wellness worked out great. It's focused on social issues of people on the Cape with cancer, while Dana Farber is the medical treatment facility."

Cape Cancer Thrift Shop donated about $65,000 to cancer causes in 2023, said Poluzzi, noting the store was closed for a while as it moved. In 2022, its service revenue totaled $140,920.

The store increased donations that year, giving $90,000 to cancer charities, including $66,000 to Dana Farber and $24,000 to Cape Wellness Collaborative, according to information available on Guidestar.org.

And this year, Cape Cancer Thrift Shop has already donated $40,000, said Poluzzi.
