Pepe Perron a Kids First recipient for dedication to Cumberland students

Mar. 29—Students at Pine View and Pleasant Hill elementary schools got a special treat last month when they went to the Cumberland County Playhouse to see "Finding Nemo Jr."

The cost? Free, courtesy of community leaders Pepe and Ann Perron.

"Our greatest reward is the smile you see on a child's face," Perron said. "We always want to make a difference in the life of a child — a positive difference in the life of a child. If we all live by that, we'll do great — and our school systems will be great."

Perron accepted a Kids First Award from Cumberland County Director of Schools William Stepp during last month's Board of Education meeting.

"He loves the children of Cumberland County," said Pine View Principal Kara Spicer, who, with Pleasant Hill Principal Tracie Buckner, nominated Perron for the honor. "He understands the power and importance of investing in our community by investing in the children. Community leaders like Mr. Perron set a wonderful example of service, compassion and generosity."

Perron was one of the first to introduce Christmas gifts for underprivileged children through the Rotary Club's Blue Jean Project, Spicer said.

He also spearheaded the fourth grade character essays. Students penning the three top essays receive prizes, with a bicycle presented to the first-place winner.

Spicer said the Perrons' gift of Playhouse admission for the Pine View and Pleasant Hill students was especially touching.

"This generous spirit has allowed hundreds of students to experience the performing arts for the first time," she said. "Pepe has expressed many times, 'It is all worth it, if it makes a positive impact on one child.'"

Perron thanked the board and school administrators.

"We just help," he said.
