People are stealing checks from Mobile County mailboxes — how to protect yourself

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents after several reports of mail being stolen from mailboxes.

According to an MCSO Facebook post, over the last couple of months, the sheriff’s office has seen “several cases where checks have been stolen from mailboxes.”

The post said the mailboxes were both residential and business.

In addition to the warning, MCSO provided tips to avoid becoming a victim of mail fraud.

  • Go to a post office when you need to pay bills through the mail. In addition, the post recommends going inside rather than using the mailboxes on the street

  • Ask for certified mail when you are having a check mailed to you. This makes sure someone has to sign for the check

  • If you suspect any suspicious activity regarding incoming or outgoing mail, contact the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office at 251-574-8633 or report it on MCSO’s website.
