(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A famous car owned by Spencer Penrose was on display recently at the Amelia Concours d’Elegance (The Amelia), an international car show held each year on Amelia Island near Jacksonville, Florida. The car, which was entered as #16 Broadmoor Special, was a crowd favorite and was named one of the 10 Most Exciting Cars at the Amelia Concours.

The car, a 1918 Pierce Arrow, was one of several owned by Spencer Penrose, founder of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC). The Pierce Arrow was converted to a race car and driven by Harry McMillin in 1922 and 1926, and by Angelo Cimino from 1927 through 1932 in the Hill Climb. Its best time to the top of Pikes Peak was 19:59.9.

Its distinctive “Coach Yellow” paint color was mixed especially for Penrose, and the car has been known as “The Yellow Devil” since its early racing days. The award-winning car is on exhibit in Colorado Springs at Penrose Heritage Museum.

Judges and spectators alike were impressed by the Yellow Devil when it made its appearance at The Amelia in 2024. The car was restored to running condition by PPIHC Frank Peterson, and his wife, Kaye.
