Pennsylvania schools signed an agreement offering law students more opportunities

DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – On Tuesday, Widener University Commonwealth Law School in Harrisburg and Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre signed a 3+3 agreement in Harrisburg.

This provides Wilkes students an opportunity to earn an undergraduate degree and a law degree in six years instead of seven.

“Which saves them time and money and gets them to their career goal working as a lawyer sooner,” said Widener University Commonwealth Law School Dean, Michael Hussey.

School leaders say this could save a student around $30,000.

This is an opportunity two second year law students say would have benefitted them.

“I think it would have just given me a new opportunity. I obviously ended up here anyway, but it would have given me like earlier access to seeing what like law schools are out there,” said second year law student Kira Meager.

“When I toured Widener, I realized that the atmosphere was one similar to Wilkes which is what I was interested in so yeah I completely agree that having that earlier access would have been nice to kind of like enter senior year already knowing what I was doing afterward,” said second-year law student Gretchen Fullmer.

The agreement continues Widener University’s focus to have more lawyers in the commonwealth.

In fact, Hussey says 75% of graduates from the class of 2023 stayed in the Commonwealth.

“There is very little in our society that isn’t impacted by the law,” said Wilkes University president, Greg Cant.
