Hill City man charged in Saturday shooting, Pennington County officials say

A Hill City man has been arrested in connection to a shooting involving multiple people Saturday, according to a Facebook post by the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.

Joel Cornelison, 33, was charged with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of first degree burglary, the post stated.

Charges are pending for others.

The department has been investigating the incident since early Saturday morning, after a shooting was reported at a residence in Hill City, near the 1800 Train, according to a Facebook post from the department at about 10:15 a.m. Saturday.

Multiple people were detained in connection to the shooting, a press release from the office Saturday afternoon stated.

The sheriff’s office received a report of shots fired at 5:30 am. at a residence on Allen Gulch Road in Hill City, the release states. Deputies responded and found blood and numerous spent casings.

“Several people had minor injuries sustained in a physical fight but it does not appear that anyone was shot,” the release stated. “A man believed to be the shooter has been detained and additional charges may be pending for other individuals involved.”

No other details have been provided at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

“We thank the Rapid City Police Department, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, and South Dakota Highway Patrol for their assistance on this call. This is another great example of collaboration between law enforcement agencies working together to keep our area safe,” Pennington County Chief Deputy Brian Mueller stated.
