Penn State Health pausing kidney transplants

HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) – Penn State Health says they’re pausing kidney transplants at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center for two weeks.

Penn State Health says the decision came after meetings with The United Network for Organ Sharing and a recent pause of liver transplants at Hershey Medical Center. Other transplant programs, such as heart, stem cell, and bone marrow transplants, are operating as usual.

There are 98 patients on the hospital’s kidney transplant list.

Penn State Health says their kidney and liver transplant programs have a 100% survival rate for patients since 2023.

“We are taking this action while we work with UNOS to review the current organizational structure of our liver and kidney programs,” said Penn State Health in a statement on Friday afternoon. “We are working to notify patients currently on our kidney transplant list of this decision and will help patients who may wish to transfer to other transplant programs or co-list with another program to do so promptly.”

Patients who have already had a transplant will continue to receive post-transplant care.
