Peninsula food pantry seeking donations in response to record demand

Nonprofit THRIVE Peninsula is holding a donation drive for its food pantry as more people are seeking support paying for food and necessities as prices rise.

Donations can be dropped off at THRIVE Peninsula at 13195 Warwick Blvd., Unit 2C in Newport News between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday. Some items the group is requesting especially include canned fruit, tuna and chicken, jelly, peanut butter, pasta and spaghetti sauce, condiments and spices, bread, and breakfast items.

“Typically, we receive the biggest boost of food and monetary donations between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but we need donations now to sustain us until then,” said Angela York, executive director, in a news release. “The demand we are experiencing is the highest we have ever seen and atypical for this time of year.”

Last month, the pantry provided food for over 500 families, while in August 2021, it provided food for almost 280 families, according to the release.
