What was supposed to be a fun night out with the lads nearly turned tragic for Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Jordy Bellerive, along with junior teammate Ryan Vandervlis and former teammate Matt Alfaro, who were hospitalized after a fire at a bachelor party in Calgary.

The three were taken to hospital late Saturday night and initial reports from Global Lethbridge had at least one in critical condition. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette confirmed with a team source that it wasn’t Bellerive.

Few if any details have emerged on the cause of or damages resulting from the blaze, but the Penguins put out a statement Sunday morning updating the condition of Bellerive.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been in direct contact with prospect forward Jordy Bellerive since he was injured in an incident on Saturday night. Assistant general manager Bill Guerin has spoken with Bellerive, who is in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery.

The Penguins ask for your thoughts and prayers for the continued recovery of Bellerive and Lethbridge Hurricanes teammate Ryan Vandervlis, and former teammate Matt Alfaro. Their health is our first priority. The team will not have any further information until more details are available.

All three have spent time with the WHL’s Lethbridge Hurricanes, who put out a release of their own immediately following the incident on Saturday.

Bellerive, an undrafted 19-year-old who posted 46 goals and 92 points with the Hurricanes last season, earned himself a three-year, entry-level contract with Pittsburgh last fall after a masterful performance at the Penguins’ annual rookie tournament.
