Penguins lose coach’s challenge on Nashville Game 4 goal (Video)

NASHVILLE – When the Pittsburgh Penguins use their coach’s challenge, it’s usually for good reason. Andy Saucier, their video coach, has gained renown for being one of the best judges of when to deploy it.

In Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Nashville Predators on Monday night, the home team got on the board in the first period thanks to a Calle Jarnkrok goal. The Penguins, however, challenged it, believing that forward Craig Smith may have interfere with goalie Matt Murray.

The play was reviewed.

The goal was upheld.

Here’s how it played out:

This overhead shot of the goal, tweeted by the Penguins, appeared to show Smith’s stick.

Like we said, the Penguins usually don’t whiff on these. Perhaps they thought there was more here with the stick then there actually was, or perhaps they felt there was enough contact with Murray to make it close.

But the refs and the War Room got this one right.
