The award-winning Pender Commerce Park continues to prove to be a successful investment for the county after an India-based manufacturer announced plans to double the size of its facility.

The park, located on U.S. 421, was recognized in 2022 by the The North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association for Specialized Planning under the Marvin Collins Award. The award recognizes transportation, environment, economic development and innovation efforts within a specific area.

The park takes up 330 acres in Pender County and is located near the Pender County/New Hanover border. The site is also less than 10 minutes from I-40.

Today, the Pender Commerce Park has provided over 1,000 jobs with employees from a five-county radius of Pender, including Bladen and Columbus counties.

Pender County leaders and Wilmington Business Development have been collaborating since 2006 on the planning of the park and the companies that the park brings in.

Current tenant of the park Polyhose Inc., which is based out of India and manufactures industrial hoses and fittings, will be doubling the side of its facility five years after starting business there.

The company sells products to some of the world's leading automotive and construction equipment companies. The expansion is to continue a strategy that the company released in late 2019.

"The proof has certainly been in the pudding as far as our association with Wilmington and the local community is concerned," said Fatema Mo, the vice president of marketing and human resources at Polyhose in a news release.

Gov. Roy Cooper, along with senior Polyhose company officials, announced Greater Wilmington as the North American base for the company's assembly and logistics operations.

Pender County Commissioner Chairman Brad George welcomed the news of Polyhose's expansion.

"Pender Commerce Park created a global economic gateway for our county, and Polyhose's success here positions us for continued domestic and foreign investment," George said in the news release.

George also credited the county's partners at Wilmington Business Development for their hard work in helping take the company to the next level.

The Pender Commerce Park includes an onsite wastewater treatment plant and utility connections for tenants. Some of those tenants include Acme Smoked Fish, Empire Distributors, FedEx Freight, Coastal Beverage, Amazon, Maersk and Home Depot.

Construction remains underway for a new 40-acre Amazon Distribution Center that is expected to bring hundreds of full and part-time jobs to the county.
