Pelosi: ‘Our agenda on women’ has been ‘strong’ [VIDEO]
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi did not see the CBS/New York Times poll showing former Gov. Mitt Romney’s lead over President Obama among women voters but said the Democratic party’s “agenda on women” has been “a strong one.”
TheDC asked Pelosi, who has said in the past that the GOP is waging a war on women, about the poll’s findings.
“I didn’t see that. I didn’t see it. But I do know that the purpose of a campaign is to put forth our path to the future and that path — you see will a Democratic path that talks about woman. We’re hoping that the Republicans will bring up the pay check —the fair-pay legislation,” Pelosi said at a Capitol press conference with a group of Democrats on the Violence Against Women Act on Wednesday.
As some of the Democrats accomplishments on women’s issues, Pelosi cited their effort to “end discrimination in the workplace” with the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. and how “being a woman” is no longer “a pre-existing medical condition” under the health care law “as it has been in the past.”
“Our agenda on women — whether it’s women’s health, women in the workplace, women in the military, women in business — has been a strong one. We have a stronger message so people understand what that is,” Pelosi said.
Addressing the House version of the Violence Against Women Act, Pelosi said homosexual, transgender and minority women are not protected.
“I simply don’t understand how you can bring a bill to the floor and say this is violence against women — except not everybody. So put it in any category you want — it’s not a good idea,” she said.
Pelosi called on House Republicans to support the Senate version of the legislation.
