PARAMUS — The 75-year-old pedestrian who was hit by a car at the exit of the Paramus Public Library parking lot on Saturday afternoon died from her injuries on Sunday night, officials said.

Helen Koons of Paramus was struck and dragged about 20 feet by a Toyota Corolla in the crosswalk area in the rear parking lot of the Paramus Public Library at 12:45 p.m., Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti said. She was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, which included head injuries.

"The incident occurred as the vehicle was exiting the rear parking lot, resulting in significant injury to the pedestrian," said a statement from Guidetti.

Claire Plager, the 94-year-old Paramus resident who was behind the wheel of the car, was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and careless driving by crash investigator Officer Michael Boccher, Guidetti said.

This is the latest in a series of fatal accidents in the area. A 94-year-old Bergenfield man was arrested last week over the fatal hit-and-run that killed an Englewood schoolteacher in Dumont on Thursday, the Prosecutor's Office said. The auto deaths by elderly drivers are raising questions about when seniors should give up the keys.
