Pedestrian struck by car in lot of Douglassville Wawa during dispute with driver hospitalized

Apr. 29—Amity Township police said Monday that they're investigating a hit-and-run incident that seriously injured a pedestrian in the parking lot of a convenience store.

The incident occurred about 2:50 p.m. Friday in the lot of Wawa on Maplewood Drive off Route 422 in Douglassville.

Amity police Chief Jeffrey Smith provided this account:

The 61-year-old victim turned into the store lot followed in close succession by the driver of a sedan. The victim got out of his vehicle and, while standing beside the passenger side of the sedan, had words with the other driver.

The sedan driver backed up the car a few feet before going forward, hitting the victim with the passenger side of the car.

The sedan left the lot and headed eastbound on Route 422.

The car was stopped in Pottstown on Saturday and its driver was detained and brought in for an interview by Amity investigators. His name is being withheld because he hasn't been charged.

Smith said police were unsure what was said between the two drivers and what triggered the dispute. The victim was believed to be in critical condition when he was admitted to Reading Hospital, Smith said.

Information on his current condition was unavailable Monday.
