Pedestrian killed while crossing dark, rainy street

Feb. 13—HIGH POINT — A pedestrian died after being hit by two cars while walking across N. Main Street on Monday night, police said.

Richard Virgil Garrett of High Point was walking across the street in the 2700 block, near Wal-Mart, about 9:20 p.m. when a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta going south on N. Main Street hit him, the High Point Police Department said.

A 2011 Honda Accord traveling south behind the Jetta then struck Garrett as he was lying in the street, police said. Garrett was dead when police arrived.

It was dark and raining at the time, and Garrett was wearing dark clothing, police said. No charges are expected to be filed.

This was the second traffic fatality for the city of High Point in 2024.
