Pedestrian killed in Rockford identified

The woman who was struck and killed Tuesday night at East State Street and Perryville Road has been identified as Tyra Traylor of Rockford.

Police were called about 8:15 p.m. to the busy intersection on a report of pedestrian and vehicle traffic crash. They arrived to find Traylor, 47, lying in the center of the eastbound lanes of East State Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told police the woman walked into the roadway and was struck. Police said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene of the crash.

City officials are urging residents to use the crosswalks, especially when crossing some of the city's busiest streets.

"It's not just a matter of convenience. It's a matter of safety for everyone on the road," Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd said in a news release issued Wednesday afternoon.. "By using crosswalks, pedestrians not only protect themselves but also contribute to smoother traffic flow and overall community safety."
