Pavliga, Badalamenti fall in primary contests

Three Republican primaries were settled Tuesday, and two incumbents won't go forward to the November ballot.

Heidi Workman defeated State Rep. Gail Pavliga, 7,627 to 4,796, according to unofficial results from the Portage County Board of Elections. Workman will face Democrat Nathaniel Adams in November.

In one Portage County commissioners, Commissioner Tony Badalamenti lost his bid for a second term, losing to Republican Jill Crawford 7,850-7,676, according to unofficial results. Crawford, a certified public accountant from Ravenna, will face Carmen Laudato, a former Streetsboro councilwoman who now lives in Ravenna, in November.

Meanwhile, Sabrina Christian-Bennett survived a primary challenge from Sherry Griffith, winning 8,457-6,851, according to unofficial results. Christian-Bennett, who has been in office for a decade, will be unopposed in November.

Pavliga and Workman had been locked in a contentious race for the seat that represents the 72nd District, which includes most of Portage County. Much of the acrimony between the two stems from last year's vote to elect Jason Stephens as speaker of Ohio's House of Representatives.

The following races also will take place in November:

Portage County clerk of courts

Democrat Jill Fankhauser vs. Republican Brian Ames

Portage County prosecutor

Republican Connie Lewandowski, unopposed in November

Portage County sheriff

Republican Bruce Zuchowski vs. Democrat Jon Barber

Portage County recorder

Republican Lori Calcei, unopposed in November

Portage County treasurer

Democrat John Kennedy vs. Republican Joseph Bica

Portage County engineer

Democrat Larry Jenkins, unopposed in November

Portage County coroner

Democrat Dean DePerro, unopposed in November
