Donald Trump’s campaign chairman on Thursday argued that some women will support his candidate over Hillary Clinton because they’re concerned about their husbands being able to afford the family bills.

“It depends on which women you’re talking about,” Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign chief, said after MSNBC host Chris Matthews asked how Trump would appeal to women who see sexist overtones in the GOP nominee’s attacks against Clinton.

“Many women in this country feel they can’t afford their lives. Their husbands can’t afford — they’re paying for the family bills,” Manafort continued.

Matthews pressed the Trump aide about the claim.

“You said women are concerned about their husband’s income,” Matthews noted.

“I can speak personally to that,” Manafort responded.

Matthews asked Manafort if he thought it was “21st-century” rhetoric to suggest that women are mostly focused on “how their husbands are doing at work.”

“They can’t afford their lives anymore,” Manafort maintained.

Critics have long cited Trump’s own history of paternalistic comments towards women. In 2005, for example, the billionaire was quoted saying his own approach to parenting was, “I’ll supply funds and she’ll take care of the kids.”
