Patient indicted after 3 staff members stabbed at Buffalo Psychiatric Center

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A patient at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center has been indicted on five felony counts after allegedly stabbing three employees.

Police and prosecutors said the incident happened on the morning of April 3. Calvin Haskins, 34, was accused of stabbing the employees while inside a housing unit for outpatient residents of the Forest Avenue facility.

Police revealed in a conference last month that this area was one that people could access without being screened for weapons.

The victims, who were all taken to ECMC, were identified as a 45-year-old man, a 55-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman. The two men, who were stabbed several times, spent several days hospitalized.

Temporary orders of protection were issued on behalf of all three victims.

This was not Haskins’ first encounter with the law. News 4 learned that he had previously been charged in connection with a stabbing at the Fountain Plaza Train Station in 2013.

Regarding the most recent incident, Haskins was arraigned in Buffalo City Court and held without bail.

Currently, he’s looking at the possibility of 57 years in prison if he’s convicted of the following charges:

  • attempted murder (two counts)

  • first-degree assault (two counts)

  • second-degree assault

After being found competent to stand trial, Haskins will return to court on July 2 for a pre-trial conference.
