Paterson cop with DWI conviction placed on paid leave in unrelated incident

PATERSON — A city police officer convicted of DWI in 2022 was placed on paid administrative leave last week, according to a departmental personnel order.

The March 15 order assigning Noel Ramos to administrative leave did not provide any details about the reason for the decision. Police Department officials declined to comment, saying the situation was a personnel matter that could not be discussed publicly.

Law enforcement sources said Ramos came under scrutiny for allegedly screaming at people while responding to a high school dismissal fight on March 14 at the corner of Colt and Ellison streets.

Ramos has been a Paterson police officer since 2018, and his salary is $56,383.

He was arrested in February 2022 after being involved in a motor vehicle crash in Clifton in which an occupant of another car was injured, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Besides DWI, he was charged with assault by auto and reckless driving. Ramos pleaded guilty to DWI and was allowed to enter the pre-trial intervention probationary program as part of the deal.

At the time of Ramos’ plea agreement, city officials would not reveal whether he faced any departmental disciplinary proceedings.
