Pass the (onion) rings: Couple gets married at Whataburger after winning contest

Six lucky couples tied the knot at Whataburger on Valentine’s Day after winning the fast food chain’s “Whatawedding” contest.

Sharon Arteaga and Dylan Welch, a couple from Corpus Christi, got married at the chain’s flagship Texas store, according to KXAN.

Welch and Arteaga were the only winners to also get a $5,000 honeymoon prize, according to Caller Times. Their wedding was streamed on Whataburger’s YouTube page.

The Friday wedding had Whataburger-themed outfits, a Ford Shelby Cobra, and a wedding cake, the news outlet reported. The couple exchanged onion rings instead of wedding rings and had an “onion ring bearer.”

“We love Whataburger and each other so much that we thought why not have a Whataburger wedding,” Welch told Caller Times. “We got engaged in December and wanted a long engagement, but when this opportunity came along we just had to take it. To our surprise, we ended up winning.”

The five other couples got married at Whataburger locations in San Antonio, Houston, Fort Worth, College Station and Grand Prairie, KXAN reported.

In Texas, 3,000 couples entered for the chance to wed at Whataburger, and it was the first time the restaurant chain had the contest, according to WFAA. Winners also got Whataburger merchandise, an officiant, and a James Avery wedding ring.
