Partial apartment collapse, plus a church roof ripped

CLEVELAND (WJW) — A large portion of the upper level of a two-story apartment building in Cleveland was torn off by winds that howled over 60 mph Friday night into Saturday morning.

The Red Cross was called out to assist any residents who needed help.

Thousands still without power after winds batter NE Ohio

Because the damage made the building unsafe and hundreds of bricks fell along with the structures’ facade onto the sidewalk and street, Cleveland police blocked off the intersection of East 125th and Superior Avenue Saturday morning while crews inspected the heavily damaged building. No one was injured.

In Garfield Heights, St. Therese Church on East 105th Street was forced to close for the time being after their roof was “severely damaged.”

“Work has commenced to ensure the interior integrity of the building and prevent any further damage,” the church said in a statement. “We hope that services will resume soon. Until further notice, however, all services normally scheduled for St. Therese will be held at Ss. Peter & Paul Church (4750 Turney Road).”
