Parks & rec approved to apply for state funding

May 21—The Weatherford Parks, Recreation and Special Events department recently got approval from city council to move forward with grant funding for a new skate park.

Several residents expressed the need for updated facilities at McGratton Park during council meetings last year, and the project was identified as one of the top three priorities from the city's Master Plan.

Nestled off North Main Street, the park includes a playground and basketball courts, but hasn't seen an update since 2004.

The grant is offered through the Texas Parks and Wildlife, with a ceiling of $750,000 and a 50/50 match from the city, totaling a potential $1.5 million construction budget for park improvement. Grants will be awarded in January 2025.

"The skating community has grown drastically in recent years," Director Jaycob Kirkpatrick wrote in his agenda report. "We need an updated park that we can be proud of and that meets the standards of quality that we continue to move forward with in our park system."

The city department recently held a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for a new pickleball complex at Love Street Park. The $1.2 million project was funded through a combination of park dedication fees and Hotel Occupancy Tax.
