Parker Street bridge to close in Lackawanna County

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced that a bridge in Lackawanna County will be closed on Wednesday for a reconstruction project.

According to PennDOT the Parker Street Bridge will be closed at 8:00 a.m. March 27 to begin the bridge reconstruction project.

The release states the purpose of this project was to replace the existing bridge that previously carried two lanes of traffic on Parker Street over the Lackawanna River in the City of Scranton, Lackawanna County.

The previous bridge was built in 1964 and has experienced deterioration, the release notes.

PennDOT the project will include pavement reconstruction on the bridge approaches and resurfacing between the intersections of North Main Avenue and Boulevard Avenue.

  • From points west of the bridge, head north onto North Main Avenue and travel 1.8 miles to the intersection of North Main Avenue and Boulevard Avenue. At the intersection, turn right and head southeast along Route 2006 (Boulevard Avenue) for 1.7 miles to the intersection of Boulevard Avenue and Parker Street.​

  • From points east of the bridge, head north onto Route 2006 (Boulevard Avenue) and travel for 1.7 miles to the intersection of Boulevard Avenue and North Main Avenue. At the intersection, turn left, head south on North Main Avenue, and travel for 1.8 miles to the intersection of North Main Avenue and Parker Street.

Officials say a pedestrian bridge will be accessible during the reconstruction of the bridge and the bridge is anticipated to reopen in the winter of 2024/2025.
