Jennifer Vu said her boyfriend woke up to get water when he realized they were in trouble.

“The window outside was completely orange. He opened the door, he saw all the flames, he shut it, he like pulled me out of bed,” said Vu.

She said it was a scramble to get out alive.

“There were people that had to jump out of windows with their kids, and that was really scary. I was in shock, I literally couldn’t even run, I was tumbling down the stairs,” said Vu.

Eleven people were hurt, and five of them were rushed to the hospital. A neighbor said when she saw what was happening, she called 911 right away.

“It was very fearful, and if it was fearful for me from across there, I know that they were extremely scared,” said Shawn Bryant.

Hours after the call, Bryant, reunited with a neighbor, thankful she was okay.

“Looking at the damage, I honestly didn’t think they were coming out, but to see that they did it, it’s a blessing to me,” said Bryant.

Another neighbor is trying to help people affected get back on their feet. She said she knows the damage a fire can do first hand.

“Your memories are burnt out, including all of your belongings. You’re just praying that someone out there listening can help, said Jereferol McGrew.

The American Red Cross is assisting in giving out supplies as well as looking to rehome victims.

Many residents said they’re grateful to be alive.
